Sitting along Steinwehr Avenue in Gettysburg, PA is a beautiful piece of history. Go back two centuries to experience an elegant candlelit restaurant, superb cuisine, and gracious hospitality. The historic house has been restored to its original beauty and character, maintaining its native stone walls, seven fireplaces, and hand-carved woodwork. The interior decor is in the traditional eighteenth-century style, with antique furnishings identical to those in Rev. Dobbin’s estate inventory. The china and flatware match fragments found during the cellar re-excavation.

Jessica James is an award-winning historical fiction author and life-long Gettysburg resident who loves sharing her passions for history and travel. She enjoys exploring the back roads of the USA and uncovering stories about unique destinations, cultures and almost-forgotten history. From a home and school to a hospital and tavern, the Dobbin House has played an essential role in the town of Gettysburg’s evolution and the nation’s history. As a landmark that has stood for more than two centuries, the Dobbin House offers visitors a glimpse into the town’s past and its wide-ranging role in American history.

For chilly days, you can warm up with Hot Buttered Rum or Hot Cyder with Apple Jack Brandy. Seafood dishes include the best Maryland crab cakes (my opinion), imperial crab, sea scallops, shrimp and catch of the day. The Academy Bed and Breakfast is an eye witness to history and served as an early Gettysburg learning institution as well. He established a Classical School in the building, the first to open its doors west of the Susquehanna River. Teaching a combination of liberal arts and theology, Dobbin earned a reputation as a highly respected educator, which brought more prestige to the school.

Obviously, it was good that Alexander Dobbin had built a large house, but it is thought that he never intended it to be just a dwelling. In 1774 he purchased 300 acres of land which became known as “Dobbin’s Farm” and began to construct his house. The house was completed in 1776, the same year as the Declaration of Independence was signed and America began its split from Great Britain. If you want a serving of history along with a delicious meal, the Dobbin House Tavern in Gettysburg PA will satisfy both desires—take it from a local. For those who enjoy immersing themselves in history in a historical home, there are a wide variety of Gettysburg Bed and Breakfasts in addition to the Dobbin House lodging options. If you’re planning a trip to Gettysburg, you have lots of options on where to stay, including many hotels that are located in downtown Gettysburg. As the scene of a violent three-day battle that left more than 51,000 casualties, Gettysburg is known as one the most haunted towns in the United States. Another unique aspect of the Dobbin House Tavern is the original spring that the house was built upon. There is no stated dress code at the Dobbin House, but the upstairs Alexander Dobbin Dining Rooms is fine dining, so you should dress appropriately. Yes, the Dobbin House Tavern has two centuries of history to draw visitors through its doors, but it’s the food that keeps them coming back. The Dobbin House Tavern is an iconic restaurant known for its romantic candlelit atmosphere, excellent food, and period style of service that reflects the sights and sounds of centuries ago. Today, the Dobbin House helps keep history alive by sharing a free museum that provides information about colonial life and those who helped slaves in their journey to escape from bondage. Through both the school and his preaching, Dobbin was instrumental in advancing the cause of the gospel in the Gettysburg region. He taught Latin, Hebrew and Greek in his classical school, and 25 of his male students became ministers. The house that the Rev. Dobbin built wasn’t small, but as fate would have it, neither was his family.

Oh my! The Dobbin House Dessert Menu

I enjoyed a meal of baked King’s Onion Soup, a char-grilled steak sandwich, and washed it down with a Rum Bellies Vengeance. This cocktail is as popular today as it was in colonial times when early American taverns served a version of this cooling, refreshing concoction. In the 18th century, rum-based drinks were the most served tavern beverage.

Rev. Dobbin played a large role in founding Gettysburg, in 1774 he purchased 300 acres of land and began a farm, a school (liberal arts college), and place to call home for himself, his wife and their 10 children. They built a farm and a substantial-sized home to hold his large family of ten children. In addition, their home served as a Classical School, the modern equivalent of a theological seminary combined with a liberal arts college. It was the first of its kind in America west of the Susquehanna River and had an excellent reputation for educating many professional men of renown. Main courses are served with a basket of assorted colonial breads fresh from the Dobbin House Tavern in-house bakery.

While we knew we shouldn’t indulge, what is a formal dinner without dessert? Offering a variety of ice cream, sorbet, Adams County Apple Pie, Pecan Pie and daily specials the choice was hard. The kids settled for ice creams, and the adults ordered the cherry cheesecake and a daily special pie. Rich, fresh and decadent, this certainly sent our meal over the top. Long before President Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address, the Dobbin House stood as a prominent home in this historic town.

Alexander’s legacy lives on through the Dobbin House, which has been carefully preserved and restored over the years and remains an important landmark in the town’s history. In the 1700s, the American colonies imported 4,000,000 gallons of rum and distilled another 5,000,000 gallons. Four Score and Seven years before the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, (1776), Reverend Alexander Dobbin built a house to begin a new life in America for himself and his family. For our main course I decided on the house special, Prime Rib and my friend ordered the Gettystown Shrimp (jumbo shrimp stuffed with crab meat).

Some people also believe that the slaves who came to the house never really left. Apparitions of slaves have been spotted throughout the house, including in the hiding places. In addition to providing cool, clean water, the spring served as a refrigerator for perishable foods. Alexander Dobbin built his house over a spring for convenience and also to be assured of water in the event of an Indian attack. Of course, the availability of a water supply was one of the most important aspects of colonial life.

TheDobbin House is closed for January 4th and 5th, 2023 for cleaning, inventory, maintenance and photographing of the 1776 historic buildingand kitchen areas. We were more than satisfied with our experience at The Dobbin House Tavern. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but any expectation I did have was far exceeded.

The Dobbin House is one of the most popular destinations in Gettysburg for visitors who are interested in the town’s history and culture. With its own bakery, the Dobbin House serves up mouth-watering desserts and fresh breads that are irresistible. The Dobbin House serves colonial and continental cuisine, prepared from the finest and freshest ingredients. This beautiful dining room is perfect for special occasions like wedding receptions or a family part. Lots of colonial charm thanks to three fireplaces and a log cabin feel. This is a place where locals celebrate milestones or treat themselves to a night out, and where visitors to Gettysburg flock to experience the unique colonial atmosphere.

The Dobbin House also rents out the historic 1858 Little Round Top Farm, where Jacob and Tillie Weikert and their four children, Henry, Elizabeth Ann, Amanda, and baby John lived during the Battle of Gettysburg. Guests can also enjoy the building’s gardens and courtyard, which are decorated with historic artifacts and feature a spring-fed pond. And, lastly, the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg, and perhaps died in the house when it was used as a field hospital, still haunt the Tavern.

Step back in time to a by-gone era, dine by candlelight and enjoy fine dining. I have been to my share of fine dining restaurants, and The Dobbin House really ranks high on my list as one of the best. In my many visits to Gettysburg I have always passed by the Dobbin House, even gone on a ghost tour there, but never dined. I really had no idea what I was missing, as this is the best dining in town. We had two 10 year old girls with us, and they thoroughly enjoyed this colonial-era experience. Dobbin House Tavern dates back to the 18th Century, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Even the servant’s period clothing is completely authentic, including the tie-on pockets. The house appears virtually the same as it did over 200 years ago. Several of their recipes have been featured in Bon Appetite and Cuisine magazines. Amazingly, the historic house appears virtually the same as it did almost 250 years ago.

Dobbin House Bed and Breakfast

Each meal begins with a bread service, baked fresh daily served with fresh butter. We began our meals with french onion soup, and a crab cake for appetizers. Both were fantastic, being a Marylander I am always cautious about crab cakes outside of Maryland, but the Dobbin House offers a delicious crab cake. You will enjoy an array of delicacies including Colonial and Continental Cuisine, prepared with thefreshest ingredients. After a full day exploring Gettysburg, we had really worked up an appetite.

I love the fact that you can bring children, and they offer a more grown and fancy menu, as our girls stated. Next time you’re up for an extended adventure, follow the ultimate hidden gems in Pennsylvania road trip. In the mid-1800s, a secret crawl space at the house may have been a first stop on the Underground Railroad north of the Mason–Dixon line. During and after the Battle of Gettysburg, the house served as a temporary field hospital. “Four Score and Seven Years” before Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address, the Dobbin House was built. Reverend Alexander Dobbin, an early pioneer who helped settle and civilize the area, erected the original structure in 1776.

Today, it is the oldest standing structure in the town limits of Gettysburg. With the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg approaching, I took a drizzly Thursday trip to the battlefield. My itinerary included a stop at the Historic 1776 Dobbin House Tavern, one of Gettysburg’s oldest and most historic homes, for a late lunch.

We are still takingall necessary measures to use best practices in deep cleaning ourlocations as per the protocols set by theCDC, the Pennsylvania Department of Health and local officials. On September 11, 1851, a deputy U.S. marshal led a raid in Christiana to recover four enslaved people in accordance with the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Free Blacks and freedom seekers in the surrounding area met this raid with a successful but deadly armed resistance. Some historians have called the Christiana Resistance (also known as the Christiana Riot) the first battle of the Civil War.

How much is my home worth? Free online home value estimate

what's my house worth

The Redfin Estimate is an automated calculation of the market value of an individual home. The Redfin Estimate is highly accurate, with the lowest published error rate for on-market homes. The Redfin Owner Estimate is a tool for homeowners to estimate their home’s value that combines the best of machine learning and human insight. Backed by the engine that powers the Redfin Estimate, we invite homeowners to provide input about their home and neighborhood to generate an even more accurate estimate of a home’s value.

View today’s mortgage rates or calculate what you can afford with our mortgage calculator. Although this may not drive up the value of your home, it is a nice security feature that another home on the market may not have. Energy efficiency, in any capacity, is a desirable feature for buyers in the market.

Get a comparative market analysis.

These tools use computer algorithms to analyze publicly available data and come up with an approximate value for your property. While comps are a great way to get a general sense of your home’s value, you can fine tune this number by consulting a real estate agent. These professionals can visit your property, assess its unique strengths and weaknesses, then present a comparative market analysis (or CMA) estimating your home’s price based on recent real estate sales in your area. The Redfin Estimate is highly accurate, with a current median error rate of just 2.02% for homes that are for sale, and 6.28% for off market homes. This means that when a home that is currently on the market sells, the Redfin Estimate will be within 2.02% of the sales price half of the time. For off-market homes, the Redfin Estimate will be within 6.28% of the eventual sales price half the time.

The most accurate home valuations are done by locally licensed, certified professionals. There is a charge for these and they take longer to complete, but they are able to account for a variety of different factors that can affect a specific property individually. Many factors can affect your home's value, including buyer demand and prices of neighboring homes.

For example, a Zestimate may be $260,503, while the Estimated Sale Range is $226,638 to $307,394. A wider range generally indicates a more uncertain Zestimate, which might be the result of unique home factors or less data available for the region or that particular home. It’s important to consider the size of the Estimated Sale Range because it offers important context about the Zestimate’s anticipated accuracy. The Zestimate was created to give consumers more information about homes and the housing market.

A winning combination of data

what's my house worth

It can raise the operable square footage of the house and is desirable for many families. A finished basement means it has a full electrical system and  finished floors, walls and ceilings. An easy way to identify a finished basement is if it’s ready to live in or can serve as an additional room such as a place for relatives to stay, a home office, or a child’s playroom. Updating your plumbing can mean anything from installing low flow plumbing fixtures to replacing a septic tank. Putting a house on the market with an updated plumbing system is desirable from both a cost perspective and convenience perspective for a buyer and can raise the value of your home as a seller.

It will also be useful to check other similar homes in the area to make sure your offer is competitive. The Zestimate is designed to be a neutral estimate of the fair market value of a home, based on publicly available and user-submitted data. An online home valuation tool such as this one (sometimes called an automated valuation model, or AVM) is a useful starting point for figuring out how much your house is worth.

Setting up a consultation with a Redfin agent is totally free and in most markets we only charge a 1% listing fee when you sell your home. Impact on your credit may vary, as credit scores are independently determined by credit bureaus based on a number of factors including the financial decisions you make with other financial services organizations. When major improvements to the algorithm are made, we may recalculate historical Zestimates for affected homes. This provides you with the best estimate of historical property valuations. This, ultimately, is the amount a buyer would be willing to pay for the home. Fair market value is heavily dependent on the state of your local housing market, in addition to the factors listed above.

Separately, the House also passed a bill that would force the China-based owner of the TikTok social media platform to either sell its stake or face a ban in the US. Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since then tens of thousands of people, mainly soldiers, have been killed or injured on both sides, and millions of Ukrainians have had to flee their homes. The Redfin Estimate History graph provides a look back at how a home's value changes over time. The Redfin Estimate value each month represents the Redfin Estimate average of all the days in that month.

However, if there are no comparable ranch style homes in that area, take a look at two-story homes on the same block instead. Every 30 days (about 4 and a half weeks), we attempt to get a new valuation for your property. We automatically refresh the estimate with the most up to date market information we have. Sometimes we refresh valuations and the property's value may stay the same or may change quite notably as we have some new data on the property or the surrounding area which leads us to make a more substantial update to its value. These updates can be viewed in your ‘My Rightmove’ account when you log in and view Tracked properties. If you're thinking about selling your home, a local Redfin agent can give you the best estimate of how much you'll put in your pocket after the sale.

To ensure the most accurate Zestimate, report all home updates to your local tax assessor. Unreported additions, updates and remodels aren’t reflected in the Zestimate. Checking a home valuation tool periodically can be helpful even if you’re not thinking of selling. There are three main types of home valuation, and all might assign slightly different dollar amounts to the same house.

Separate-Sample Pretest-Posttest Design: An Introduction

pre and post test design

The cases in VCS allowed the users to ask questions to the virtual patient, order a limited number of lab tests, and answer questions on managing the actual case, see Fig. 2In computing the distribution center all cases are used, each one of them contributing its proportional share of change; in computing the percentage of changes only cases above a given cutoff are involved and, moreover, all of them equally weighted regardless of their change. Were FAB is the interaction F statistic, glAB are the interaction degrees of freedom, and N is the total number of scores in the design (adding both groups). “Statistically significant change at the group level may not be significant at the individual level (…). Mean changes for a group may be the result of few individuals with relatively large changes, or numerous individuals with relatively small changes” (Schmitt and Di Fabio, 2004, pp. 1008–1009).

Best Subset Selection in Machine Learning (Explanation & Examples)

The HemoTypeSC test has been tested and validated in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa, showing a sensitivity of 93.4% and specificity of 99.9% compared to the gold standard test – high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) [34]. While presenting the confidential test results to the participants, the CHT also provided them with basic post-test counseling and referral for NBS. The literature indicates that VP cases are predominantly used in pre-service training of health care providers and seldom for those who have started practicing. The reluctance to utilize VP cases for CPD may stem from the assumption that practicing nurses primarily rely on on-site learning to engage with patients and learn from their more experienced colleagues. While on-site learning can be effective and adequate for developing the clinical reasoning skills of practicing nurses, it may have limitations in certain contexts, such as health centers in Rwanda.

Maturation refers to the change in the characteristics of participants receiving treatment, which affects the posttest results. History refers to anything participants experience outside of the treatment that could affect their posttest results. Threats to internal validity can make distinguishing relationships between variables very difficult.

Now, suppose that a different researcher wants to assess the effectiveness of a new treatment for autism in 10- year old children. She applies the new intervention using the exact same sample size and research design, and finds the same effect sizes estimates. In the context of an intervention to treat autism spectrum disorders, she can arguably claim that the effect is “very large” (indeed, she can claim the Nobel Prize). The term “controlled” refers to the presence of a concurrent control or comparator group. The outcomes are then compared between the intervention and the comparator groups. Several variations of interventional study designs with varying complexity are possible, and each of these is described below.

Pretest, posttest, and intervention

The Solomon four-group design absolves the weakness of external validity because it tests both pretested and un-pretested participants. Unlike randomized controlled trials (RCTs), pre-post studies do not involve random assignment of participants to different conditions. The lack of randomization introduces the potential for selection bias and limits the ability to control for confounding variables. Based on pilot study findings, the paper cases took approximately 20 min to complete on average.

Gain scores used to be popular in education research, but they have fallen out of favor as statistical techniques have improved because they are unreliable. Each measurement, such as the pre-test and the post-test, includes measurement error. When these scores are combined into one score, statistical analysis can no longer account for this error, leading to less reliable results than analyzing the two scores simultaneously. How to handle multiple data points per participant will be discussed in a later post on statistical analysis.

Learning Outcomes

The one-group pretest-posttest design does not require a large sample size nor a high cost to account for the follow-up of a control group. Over time, factors unrelated to the intervention can naturally change and influence the outcomes. Participants’ conditions can change due to factors such as natural recovery, lifestyle changes, or aging.

Google Sheets: How to Remove Grand Total from Pivot Table

For example, one common procedure is to use the standard deviation of the pre- scores (σpre). The choice of the standardizer is related to the ability of the effect size measure to deal with pre-post dependency. In this design, participants are assigned to different intervention arms without following a “random” procedure. For instance, this may be based on the investigator's convenience or whether the participant can afford a particular drug or not. Although such a design can suggest a possible relationship between the intervention and the outcome, it is susceptible to bias – with patients in the two groups being potentially dissimilar – and hence validity of the results obtained is low.

To assess IBC, researchers may use various indices that can be grouped under the name of reliable change indices. Some of these indices are based on standardization of pre-post differences, others on the standard error of measurement, and yet others on linear regression predictions (Crosby et al., 2003; Ferrer and Pardo, 2014). The strengths of pre-post designs are mainly based in their simplicity, such as data collection is usually only at a few points (although sometimes more). However, pre-post designs can be affected by several of the threats to internal validity of QEDs presented here. Pregnancy presents a critical period for any maternal and child health intervention that may impact the health of the newborn.

If individuals are selected based on extreme values at baseline, their subsequent measurements are likely to be closer to the mean, which can mistakenly be attributed to the intervention. Often random selection and random assignment of individuals to groups can minimize these threats to internal validity, but not in all cases. University of Southern California is a great choice for students interested in a degree in design & applied arts.

The global burden of SCD has been shown to be on the increase due to contributions from Nigeria, India, and Democratic Republic of Congo [3]. The increasing number of SCA will continue to have a major impact on the under-5 mortality rate and particularly on healthcare services and financing in Nigeria [3]. To reduce the global burden of SCD, the role of education to improve the knowledge and awareness of SCD has been emphasized as an important factor [10, 11]. However, controversies exist regarding the appropriate time for education on SCD [12]. All nurses who worked at the health center, in consultation rooms, and reported proficiency in understanding the English language were potential participants in this study. At this design stage, the first step at improving internal validity would be focused on selection of a non-equivalent control group(s) for which some balance in the distribution of known risk factors is established.

Loss to follow-up constitutes a problem if the group of participants who quit the study (i.e. those who did the pretest and quit before they were assessed on the posttest) differ from those who stayed until the study was over – i.e. the loss to follow-up is not random. This design uses the outcome of the pretest to judge what might have happened if the intervention had not been implemented. The problem with this approach is that the difference between the outcome of the pretest and the posttest might be due to factors other than the intervention.

For example, there was no difference in the performance scores between participants working in urban areas and those working in rural areas. In addition, we lent tablets and portable internet equipment to participants, and thus, they used similar devices with similar internet capabilities in both urban and rural areas. Further on, we could not detect any statistically significant differences in pre-test results resulting in the educational level of the nurses, see Table 2. However, there was a difference in post-test scores on gastric cancer based on the level of education. In the post-test of gastric cancer, participants with a diploma level scored significantly higher than participants with a secondary education level (0.039).

However, there were no statistically significant differences in most VP cases. While the basic ITS design has important strengths, the key threat to internal validity is the possibility that factors other than the intervention are affecting the observed changes in outcome level or trend. Changes over time in factors such as the quality of care, data collection and recording, and population characteristics may not be fully accounted for by the pre-intervention trend. Similarly, the pre-intervention time period, particularly when short, may not capture seasonal changes in an outcome. In order to enhance the causal inference for pre-post designs with non-equivalent control groups, the best strategies improve the comparability of the control group with regards to potential covariates related to the outcome of interest but are not under investigation.

Essentially, if it speaks to you, it can likely have a place in your bathroom design. The bathroom is one of the most time-consuming rooms to clean, so it probably comes as little surprise that one of the most prominent emerging design trends is touches that focus on cutting down cleaning time. One of the most significant shifts we’re seeing in the home industry right now is color palettes moving towards warmer, cozier tones, and bathroom design is no exception. Instead of stark whites, designers are incorporating more tans, off-whites, beiges and browns in these spaces.

How you set up your bathroom can have an impact here, with wall-mounted toilets giving you easier access to cleaning the floor and organizational systems keeping everything looking neater. In many homes, bathrooms are becoming less of a place for brushing teeth and washing hair and more of a place for relaxation and recharging. Design a bathroom of your style with top-rated bathroom remodelers from Bath&ShowerPros.

Whether it’s a cozy two-bedroom or spacious five-bedroom home, the Contemporary style home can be customized to create the perfect first or second home. The cost to build a modern contemporary home can vary widely depending on various factors, such as location, size, materials, and features. These sophisticated exteriors often feature experimental exterior coverings that create new state-of-the-art architecture. This imaginative approach to homebuilding is highlighted with new home ideas cohesively blending with timeless design efforts and materials in a beautiful pattern. Exterior highlights may include a series of boxy spaces, some mixed siding that is usually sleek featuring clean lines, and contemporary wood/timber exteriors that can also be a stylish exterior choice. Modern house plans provide a distinctive blend of style, practicality, and forward-thinking design principles.

Designed to promote mental presence, the Forgetting Time House is all about balance. Areas of openness and enclosure have been created around a huge courtyard with uplifting greenery and a pool, where life slows down. Our mission is to help people visualize, create & maintain beautiful homes. We bring to you inspiring visuals of cool homes, specific spaces, architectural marvels and new design trends. A horizontal program of concrete & stone volumes, courtyards, and terraces, this 905-square-meter modern house has an elongated profile with a flat roof. The swimming pool lays flatly across the landscape, echoing the long line of a concrete sun terrace.

Similar to this architectural style is the mid-century modern style, which includes low-sloping rooflines, concrete floors, and post-and-beam construction. Some other inspiring ways we’ve seen designers take on this trend include natural materials on places like cabinets and fixtures designed to mimic natural features like leaves and waterfalls. Homeowners are outfitting their bathrooms with spa-worthy accessories and many designers and brands are noticing. Recent trends include frameless, doorless steam showers, rain heads and built-in seating, according to a 2024 trend report by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). We’ve also noticed aromatherapy devices, heated floors and towel warmers to name a few comfortable upgrades.

The 2,000-square-meter home includes eight bedrooms, a theater, and a wellness area with a hammam and gym. Standing on a beauty spot in the Pacific Palisades foothills of LA, this 17,000 square-foot modern home has terraces and a feature staircase that rise from the natural contours of the environment. Discounts are only applied to plans, not to Cost-to-Build Reports, plan options and optional foundations and some of our designers don't allow us to discount their plans. Other great ways to be more sustainable include using natural materials like bamboo, recycled glass or cork as well as low-VOC paints and finishes Oakley suggests. Sustainable materials and fixtures are becoming increasingly important all around your home and the bathroom is no exception. And since many of your favorite brands are focusing on sustainability, that means that you don’t need to make sacrifices on style or luxury in order to make your space better for the environment.

Overlapping planes construct this 985-square-meter home, which negotiate the topography of a rocky Spanish hillside. Rough white concrete bands and warm wood cladding accentuate interlocking levels and large terraces. A deluxe 1,260 square meter villa in Son Vida, Palma, includes a large outdoor swimming pool and south-facing multi-level terraces. The stepped terraces follow the topography of the hillside, which is commonly referred to as the “Beverly Hills of Mallorca”. Where to Start: Backward Design Teaching + Learning Lab

They will never sit for a test and not know what the test is talking about or what he wants them to do. Unfortunately, this results in tests or assessments that don’t always reflect what the students did or learned. We’ve all experienced an unfortunate class or two where the test didn’t seem to reflect anything we had learned in lessons or course materials up until that point.

Successful lesson plans often contain a mix of instructional strategies and activities, since asking students to adapt to different modes of learning is an effective way to keep them engaged. Once you know the standards your students are expected to meet by a certain grade level, make a list of all the foundational knowledge they need to reach that goal. Using the ratio example, the teacher would need to ensure their students have a solid understanding of multi-digit multiplication, division, factors and multiples.

The test asks students a lot of questions that would show an understanding of these concepts, so we’re covered. If we assume that a large portion of a student’s grade is based on the test, then students are not being measured on their achievement of that standard. The standard does not require students to memorize the phases of the moon. Nor does it ask them to “demonstrate knowledge” of how the whole system works. The standard wants students to develop a model and use it to describe the system.

Curriculum design, and instructional design

Mother-son duo Kathleen and Tommy Clements of Clements Design are known for their light-filled, gallery-like residential spaces that have attracted a celebrity following including Jennifer Aniston, Ellen DeGeneres, and Justin Theroux. By incorporating rustic and sculptural pieces while maintaining clean, bright lines, the team distills the innate and subtly sophisticated beauty present within the architecture, setting, and furnishings they incorporate. Their projects are frequently featured in prominent design publications including Elle Decor and Architectural Digest.

Both the Dick and Carey model and the backward design model are goal and objective oriented; assessment is created based on learning objectives and goals, and instruction is created based on evaluation and assessment. The Dick and Carey model, however, is a more systemic model in that making changes to components affects other components and, therefore, the changes occur in parallel. In the more linear backward design model, the steps are non-flexible which means that skipping or changing steps is not an option. Another important aspect of backwards design is that it helps ensure your assessment is authentic. All authentic assessment starts with alignment to intended learning outcomes.

Using a process like backward design helps us get better at making these decisions. By making this approach part of our regular practice, we’ll be able to look back on a day, a week, or a year of teaching and say with a lot more certainty that when they were under our care, our students learned. This is a hard pill to swallow, because I wasn’t half bad as a teacher. I had decent relationships with my students and I believe most of them had good experiences in my classroom, but real, durable learning? And I got to drool over Matt Dillon in the movie’s opening scene again and again and again.

This model prioritizes knowledge and focuses on what is most important for students to understand and achieve. Arguably, if design begins with the end in mind, instruction is more likely to clearly focus on the identified desired results[3]. Furthermore, when a teacher designs a lesson without a plan for the final assessment, they may be tempted to add activities or units to the lesson just for the sake of filling class time. Students of all ages know when they are asked to do something pointless in class; they can spot “busy work” from a mile away, and will disengage as they see fit.

Today a thriving international, full-service interior design firm with a diverse and talented team. RVD creates award-winning design concepts for Five-Star luxury hotels and resorts, multifamily real estate projects, restaurants, and high-end residential projects worldwide. Unlike in backward lesson design, the assessment here is created after the lessons. Therefore, a teacher could risk omitting certain facets of the lessons from the final assessment, only acknowledging in hindsight that they probably could have saved valuable class time by skipping certain units or activities.

This perspective can lead to the misconception that learning is the activity when, in fact, learning is derived from a careful consideration of the meaning of the activity. Perhaps due to his London-bred sensibilities, L.A.-based Paul Fortune creates subtle and timeless interiors that elude the certainty of a single era or style. Having designed residential spaces for the likes of fashion designer Marc Jacobs, screenwriter Sofia Coppola, and Fun!

Furthermore, the answers to question #3 regarding enduring understandings can be adapted to form concrete, specific learning goals for the students; thus, identifying the desired results that instructors want their students to achieve. As previously stated, backward design is beneficial to instructors because it innately encourages intentionality during the design process. It continually encourages the instructor to establish the purpose of doing something before implementing it into the curriculum. Therefore, backward design is an effective way of providing guidance for instruction and designing lessons, units, and courses. Once the learning goals, or desired results, have been identified, instructors will have an easier time developing assessments and instruction around grounded learning outcomes. Abackward design lesson plan can be an excellent way to improve your student outcomes and learning processes.

45 best Minecraft house ideas and designs for 1 20

minecraft house

If you’re looking for the best Minecraft house ideas, I’m sharing some pretty cool builds that will inspire you. If you’d rather live above ground, this treetop house idea is for you. YouTuber ‘Typface’ has made a brilliant treehouse tutorial, which is easy to follow for newbies.

Large starter house

The prismarine blocks used to create the roofing are especially nice, and provide a striking contrast against the dark wooden walls. Zaypixel is great at creating idyllic-looking scenes, and this large two-storey farmhouse is no exception. This wooden house is a starter home worthy of even the best Minecraft seeds. This timelapse build from TheMythicalSausage is probably not good as a step-by-step tutorial to follow, but it offers some good inspiration on a large house/compound/base-style build.

While it doesn’t take magical powers to build it yourself, note that this Minecraft house uses a great variety of materials, which would require you to visit several biomes in survival mode. Gathering quartz may be especially time-consuming, but you can always swap it to a more standard material like diorite. No complex designs, no rare materials, and just enough room to fulfill its purpose. As this easy house idea only requires wood, you can easily finish it on day one in a new Minecraft world. Despite its simplicity, the house still looks stylish, and you may use the creator’s easy decoration suggestions if you wish to add a little flair.

Modern Mansion

But, if you’re looking for a unique modern-style house to add to your world (perhaps you’re working on a city?), this would be a great addition. Have you put together a tutorial on how to build it, or a YouTube video that shows it off? Send us a link to it in the comment section below and we’ll consider featuring it in this post! Also, please consider subscribing to these YouTuber’s channels as they have put in some real effort in bringing you these tutorials.

It's a small, cosy, rustic house that strikes me as the perfect base to build far from your main home. We showcased another house-on-the-cliff at the top of this list and, here, we’ve included another one. In this video, TheMythicalSausage provides us with a timelapse build of his Nether Survival Cave Base. This isn’t a great option if you’re looking for a step-by-step tutorial, but it might give you some inspiration if you were looking for some new ideas on building a house/base in the Nether. If you’re looking for a bigger jungle house design, then you might want to watch this video from VexelVille.

If you feel like changing it up, you can replace wooden house designs with any of the ten Minecraft wood types, including Tales and Trails bamboo planks. Wooden houses are extremely versatile, easy to gather materials for, and can be created to suit your Minecraft needs. In our opinion, Acacia is one of the most difficult wood types to build with, thanks to its bright orange tone.

First, it doesn’t require a lot of hard-to-get material, so it is a viable option early-on in survival mode. This is the third house idea from TonyMC (and, not the last—see below.) This woodland mansion is incredibly well-done and will work well for anyone who is looking to build their house in the forrest. This house uses a lot of brick, wood, stone bricks, and cobblestone, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to build in your survival game as long as you are willing to spend some time on it. YouTuber BlueNerd has a few entries on this list, and for good reason.

Especially when it comes down to the design of the interior spaces, everything seems to be so detailed and well made. The combination of specific colours and the placement of the lights at certain angles give a very special calming vibe. You probably expect a mansion to be big, but this one is next-level big. The materials required for it probably amount to the number of materials every building listed here requires so you can make a mental image of that. Unbelievably, you can actually make a home with waterfalls for walls. ManDooMiN did exactly that, and it turned out to be more difficult than anticipated.

Simple treehouse

This next Minecraft house idea is a true marvel and it’s all down to the planning. Thankfully YouTuber ‘LubovLC’ has made a fantastic and easy to follow video, which you can watch above. The underwater house does exactly what it says on the tin – it situates you under the depths of the Minecraft waters, giving an amazing view of what lurks within this cold ocean . This large oak base is one of the best projects you can start building as a beginner. The design features multiple interior layers and a number of different entrances with big open space areas. A detailed list of materials is also included to make it even easier.

Make sure you’re using BSL shaders to get the exact colors and looks. It also stands out from the rest of the fancy houses – not for its lack of looks but for how useful and effective it can be. If you’re a fan of Barbie and have always wanted to make the dream Barbie house, Brookella has got your back with the right colors and layout. This White Container House by ManDooMiN is another 3-floor structure that has a futuristic design and screams minimalism from every corner. We’d also recommend you use a Northern Lights Resource Pack which magically recreates the Aurora Borealis northern lights.

If you are looking for a smaller, compact house to possibly fill out a fantasy village or for a solo adventure, the Small Fantasy Cottage brings together cottage core with fantasy. There are thatched roofs, lots of flowers, and everything you need fits well into the house you've build! It's also a good starter home if you are building in survival and need to gather more materials. This unique design features multi-level gardens, pools, and even a garage. This certainly isn't a fast build, especially for beginners and it requires a long list of materials. This is by no means an easy house to build, but it's one that can be extremely safe from danger and look incredibly cool.

Minecraft house: how to get started and build ideas

minecraft house

This is a full tutorial that walks you through how to build this exact setup. The build relies heavily on smooth quartz blocks and also features plain glass, oak, and blackstone. While TheMythicalSausage video above is more a timelapse video than a tutorial, in this video, he offers a very detailed step-by-step build of this cool swamp house. This build relies on a lot of dark oak, but features regular oak as well. There are a lot of different materials used to decorate the house, but the core of the build doesn’t require too many hard-to-get resources, so you should be able to build it in survival fairly easily. If you’ve got a lot of wood to spare in your survival game, this build from Folli is worth checking out.

Minecraft house ideas: survival house ideas

If you'd rather build something a little simpler than the above example, YouTuber Cortezerino gives us this understated design for a Japanese-style village house. Small in stature, the combination of nether brick roofs, stripped logs, and dark fences make it an eye-catching abode despite its size, and a welcome addition to any Minecraft village. All of these blend together to create a very detailed and good-looking house for any Minecraft player to emulate, and the idyllic bamboo garden surroundings only elevate this peaceful domicile to true zen qualities. If you want to build something in line with modern sensibilities, YouTuber IrieGenie has put together a lovely design complete with a pool out front. The materials required are far from cheap, and are largely composed of quartz, concrete, and granite as well as the more affordable stone and sandstone blocks - but the results are exquisite.

Hidden Underground Base

That narrow space makes for such a wonderful little place, protected on either way by the cliffs, and with a full terrace bridge underneath to seal the deal. Beautifully coloured and fairly simple to make, the build takes just a couple of hours but requires some not-so-beginner-friendly materials. A lake home that is as gorgeous as this one shouldn't pass by unnoticed. It has a small plot of land for a garden, the whole build is made out of wood, and it looks fantastic. It's great from a survival standpoint too, since it's located over water.

Simple cherry blossom starter house

This cute fantasy cottage is a simple house that’s cozy and fun to make. The YouTube video below will show you how to make this cottage as well as the resource pack used. This mini house has a simple appearance that still looks quite nice. Additionally, it doesn’t require a lot of materials, which is great. While you are perusing these awesome Minecraft house ideas, why not check out the best Minecraft survival servers – this way you can build one of these house ideas in a server that suits you.

Unlike many other builds, this one takes everything that you need and places it over water. On top of that, the resources required can be found in survival mode, making it a fantastic Minecraft survival house idea, if you’re willing to do a bit of material gathering. Medieval castles have it all – they look cool, have a considerable amount of space, and often use easy-to-find resources, making them perfect easy Minecraft houses to build.

Simple Modern House

As mentioned in the video, you might want to swap the white terracotta blocks for white concrete if it looks too pink. DiddiHD has put together another treehouse build, this one even larger and located in the middle of a jungle. It's much more sporadic with the placement of its living areas, which gives it a really nice organic look, as though the house has grown over time along with the tree. Of all the Folli builds featured on this list, this one is surprisingly my favourite. Sometimes the wheels of invention get stuck, and the only acceptable grease to get them moving again is to seek out new inspirations for your next Minecraft build.

Large Japanese House

But effective protection is only one part of the equation – showing off your personal style accounts for the rest. Putting your creativity on display can be hard work though, and utilizing Minecraft's palette to express yourself is no exception, whether it's with Minecraft skins or a new house. I love it when I come across a unique build such as this tree portal. This build is included in episode 6 of Taking Our World to the Next Level. This house has lots of great detail, but still has a simple and classic appearance. If you want to see this build from different angles and also check out a few close-ups, check out @theuzeetos on Instagram.

This tutorial gives detailed step-by-step directions and is easier to follow than some of the tutorials listd above. I don’t know what it is about this TonyMC house build, but it is one of my favorites on this list. I think the realism of lifting the house up on stone blocks is what makes the build for me, but it probably also has to do with its Medieval design as well.

Like his house idea above, this build features a lot of wood—which makes it great for a forrest setting. In total, the tutorial is nearly an hour long, but it is detailed and easy-to-follow. Are you looking for some inspiration for your next Minecraft house build? In this post, we’ve listed 55 awesome Minecraft house ideas to help you build your next home.

This desert-style Minecraft house from ToxicKailey features both above-ground and below-ground sections. This is a large build, but since it is mainly comprised of sand and sandstone, it would be a doable design even if you’re in a survival game. The video is about 30-minutes long, but a lot of the wall-building is edited—so, you’ll need to dedicate a bit more time to this one. Here’s another cool Minecraft house idea if you want to build something on the water. In this video, BlueBits walks you through how to build a “Boat House,” with detailed step-by-step instructions.

It has a very natural look (as it's mostly built out of wood), and is fairly small in size, accommodating mostly the basic player needs. However, it retains a modern appeal and could be considered a "tiny house" in Minecraft (especially compared to some other ones on this list). It's further enhanced by the slightly offset semi-circular pool, which makes it that much more beautiful. Another house by WiederDude, but this one is a little bit more tricky to pull off.

All-in-all, this ~15-minute tutorial is easy to follow and will give you a nice-looking starter house. Personally, I’m not into the whole modern house look—both in Minecraft and in real life. But, there’s a huge trove of Minecrafters who love the modern house look and that’s why there are so many tutorials on YouTube of how to build these style houses.

Dubbed the “Ultimate Survival House” this house design will fit well in a forrest setting. This tutorial isn’t for the faint-of-heart, though, as it is over an hour and thirty minutes long—but, if you’re looking for a detailed Minecraft house tutorial that covers everything, this one is perfect. Having that in mind, why not make some bold choices, not only in the design and layout of your house, but the materials used? Make a mark on the world that stands out, as opposed to blending in. With many modern houses, you see architects aiming to build a cool house that's unique. After all, Minecraft being the ultimate creativity tool should lend you some amount of personal expression.

The chains and lanterns, the flora creeping up the walls, the shutters made from trapdoors, and the excellent clock faces in the towers all combine to make this house a real feast for the eyes. For those of you that are looking for ideas for houses to build in areas that get snow, this winter mansion is a great option. YouTuber ToxicKailey built this house and has put together a ~30-minute long tutorial that walks you through how to build it step-by-step. YouTuber Savvy found a nice suburban brick house on Google and turned it into a Minecraft house. Savvy’s tutorial igoes fast, so you’ll have to be quick (or use the pause button a lot) to keep up.
